I brought home a bird and it sings all day
But the charm of the song has faded away.
For I couldn't bring along the clear blue sky
The music of breeze and the river near-by!
I saw seashells as I walked on the shore
I brought them home, a dozen or more.
But the noisy shells, when they came to me
Gave away all joy to the sand and sea!
I fell in love with the maiden I wed
In gold and pearl and flowers all spread.
But the bliss was lost, and fairy she was none-
When the flowers had withered, enchantment undone!
A bird or shells or a fairy's sight
I possess no more, yet dwell in delight
For all senses give joy and pass it to my soul
Beauty dies in parts and breathes in a whole!
